MODIS Landcover

The MODIS Terra + Aqua Land Cover Type Yearly Global product at ~500m (463.3m) resolution (MCD12Q1, V051, covering 2001 to 2010) were extracted. The product is provided in an Integerized Sinusoidal Grid (ISG) projection, and thus needs to be re-projected to UTM and then interpolated to basin grids at 1km. To interpolate categorical data (such as landcover) from finer scale to coarse scale, majority interpolation is the most appropriate method. However, from 500m (actually 463.3m) to 1km, the majority class is very difficult to determine in the 1km grid box, as shown in the figure below. Thus, we disaggregate 500m land cover to 100m resolution using the nearest neighborhood method, and then define the major class in the 1km grid box by accounting for the covered area.
